Text Book:
Complex Analysis, by J.Bak and D.Newman, publ. Springer-Verlag (recommended). Electronic copy available from the library catalog. Other recommended texts: "Function Theory of One Complex Variable" by R. Greene and S. Krantz; "Functions of One Complex Variable I" by J. Conway
Prerequisites:
Math 2123A/B, or Math 2122A/B, and permission of the Mathematics department.
Evaluation:
Homework = 30%, Midterm = 30%, Final examination = 40%.
Content:
We will cover the following topics: The Cauchy-Riemann equations, elementary functions, Branches of the logarithm and argument, Cauchy's integral theorem and formula, winding number, Liouville's theorem and the fundamental theorem of algebra, The identity theorem, the maximum modulus theorem, Taylor and Laurent expansions at isolated singularities, the residue theorem and applications, The argument principle and applications.

Homework


Homework will be assigned on a regular basis and will include routine exercises as well as some challenging problems. Students registered in Math 9024 will be given additional problems.
  1. Assignment 1 due Sept 23 in class.
  2. Assignment 2 due Oct 7 in class.
  3. Assignment 3 due Oct 19 in class.
  4. Assignment 4 due Nov 14 in class. (New version posted Nov 13 to fix a type in Problem 5. The deadline is extended to November 16 in class)
  5. Assignment 5 due Dec 2 in class.

Exams


  1. Midterm is on Thursday October 20, 6 - 8 PM in MC 108. This exam covers the material of Chapters 1 -- 4 of the textbook plus all the material covered in class up to October 14 inclusive. The exam is closed books, closed notes.
  2. Final Exam will be on Thursday December 15, 2 - 5 PM. Location: SH 3307. Practice problems for the Final.
