Course Outline

Hilbert spaces (orthonormal bases, linear operators, basic space geometry); basic theory of bounded linear operators; basic Banach spaces (including Hahn-Banach theorem, Uniform Boundedness, and Closed Graph theorem).

Students are expected to attend all lectures and complete all assignments, and examinations. No aids are permitted during the exams. Regular homework is an essential part of the course; it is the student's responsibility to keep up with the assigned homework and to seek additional help if and when it is needed..

The overall course grade will be calculated as listed below:

  1. Assignments (5) = 29%
  2. Midterm Test = 31%
  3. Final Exam = 40 %

Homework

Homework will be collected by the following schedule.

  1. Assignment 1. Due Thursday, Sept 23 in class.
  2. Assignment 2. Due Monday, Oct 7 in class.
  3. Assignment 3. Due Thursday, October 21, in class.
  4. Assignment 4. Due Thursday, Nov 18 in class.
  5. Assignment 5. Due Friday, Dec 2 in class.
Homework should be submitted by email to shafikov@uwo.ca as a single PDF file. Assignments submitted after the deadline will receive an automatic 10% deduction. Every assignment written in TeX or LaTeX will receive 1 extra point. Students in 9054 will receive additional problems to submit.


Exams

There will be an in-class midterm on Tuesday October 26.

The Final Einal is on Sunday, December 19, 10 AM - 1 PM in EC 2130 . Please mark this date in your calendar!
